On February 11, Over 50 people gathered to go door to door seeking justice for workers at Walker Health Care Center. Members of Walker Methodist Community Church, Workers Interfaith Network, and the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees canvassed in neighborhoods near the south Minneapolis nursing home, collecting hundreds of signatures and dozens of commitments to put up lawn signs.
Almost 4 years ago, workers at Walker voted to join AFSCME. But management at the nursing home appealed the election, and used the appeals to delay negotiations with workers. Now, the National Labor Relations Board has rejected management’s appeals, opening the door for new negotiations. But Walker’s CEO continues to try to find new ways to thwart workers seeking justice.
Meanwhile, workers are concerned about a sick-leave policy that encourages them to work when they are ill. They are concerned about issues that diminish the quality of patient care including short staffing at the home, and excessive overtime. But perhaps most importantly, workers are concerned about winning respect from their employers.
